Texture and stencils

I lurve stencils and it's a little bit obscene how many I have. I also love to mix up what I put through my stencils so I wanted to show you here just a few of the ways I use them on these two 4 x 4 inch panels.

My base was the obvious Dylusions inks sprayed through Dylusions letter jumble stencil and checkered spots.  I then used gesso to add more letters (I used my finger to spread the gesso - messy).

The die cut circles are cut from another piece of
watercolour paper also sprayed and stencilled.

Here I've put texture paste through a Balzar Designs Punchinella stencil then when that was dry I went over the top with more paste and the Letter jumble stencil. To pick out the detail I skimmed over the top with a lime Pie fluid edger ink pad by Prima

I put more texture paste through the Punchinella stencil and when that was dry I put the stencil back over the top and added Rock Candy Distress Crackle paint to it.

This is just the crackle paint with the Punchinella stencil.

Here I've added Claudine Hellmuth Teal Studio paint to the texture paste and used the edge of the Letter Jumble stencil. I love the colour of the texture paste it didn't water down the paint colour at all and I mixed it one to one.

Here you can just about see the original gesso stencilling underneath.

This is the finished card. At the last minute I used a pen to scribble through the Punchinella circles too just because I could.

I hope I've inspired you to get out the stencils and see what you can put through them. Why not try a 4X4 size, it's less intimidating than a full sized journal page and a great size to experiment on.

Texture Heart

Hello!
A simple project from me today.....simple, but with LOADS of texture! All done with the minimum of products too, just tissue paper, paint and crackle medium....
I took a wooden heart (I bought loads of these last Christmas from my local cheapie shop..£1.50 each- bargain!), and covered it with crumpled tissue paper. I used the 'composer' tissue wrap from Tim H, but as you can only see texture, not design it really doesn't matter what is actually on the paper!
I glued it down with a glue stick, making sure the crumples stayed that way! I then built up some painty colour, starting with brown paint, and adding a little dark red. Once this was dry, I covered the whole thing with clear crackle paint.
Once the crackly magic had happened, I then went in with more paint, a little black, gold and red again...
Don't forget to do the sides!
I finished off the heart by adding a rusty wire hanger, and some gingham ribbon...
A tiny word cut from an old book page was my last touch!
This kind of depth is easy, just keep adding and adding, building up thin layer after thin layer. Too much colour? Wipe it off with a baby wipe whilst still wet. Easy!
Have fun!

Puffy Heart Love!

Hello!
I've been playing with sticky backed canvas..... and I sewed a puffy heart!
I'll get to the heart in a minute.....
The base for this is a box frame, so a nice bit of depth...
The background is very easy, it just takes a while because of the drying issues! Firstly, I covered the frame with old book pages using multi medium. This is the first waiting time...multi medium is not over fond of the heat tool, heat too much and it starts to bubble and lift up whatever you've stuck down! So, once dry, I gave it a wash of brown paint which takes seconds! I sponged embossing ink through a stencil, then added green embossing powder to give the detail....
A tiny bit of black splatter stamping finished the design. Then it was part two of the waiting game as I covered the whole thing in clear crackle medium!
Whilst that was drying (it takes a good 2-3 hours even in this heat!) I created the heart. I drew a very rough heart on the canvas, then cut two shapes out. Now, sticky backed canvas is ....um.... sticky backed. This isn't really ideal when you want to sew it! I've found the best way round this is to peel off the backing paper, then pounce the sticky side with an anti static bag, one of those things you use before you emboss to stop stray powder sticking where you don't want it! I would imagine rubbing a little talcum powder over the sticky side would work too, if you don't have an anti static bag. Once the sticky wasn't sticky any more, I sewed part way around the heart, stuffed it with a little wadding, then sewed it up completely. Despite the heart being all soft and squishy, you can still treat it as a canvas surface.....so I painted it! Red Claudine Hellmuth paint to be precise.....
I also covered it in crackle paint......
Once all the crackles were dry, I glued the heart to the background.
The hanger is a piece of driftwood, decorated to match the background...
I hammered two nails into the top of the wooden frame, then wrapped wire around the driftwood and around the nails to join the two parts together.
I rubbed a little gold paint into the crackles here and there to highlight them, then added the Alphapart words as a finishing touch....
I think I'll be making more puffy canvas shapes, really enjoyed making this one!

Embossing part 2 - with Valentine inspiration.

It's Valentines day and for this, part two of my embossing workshop, I'm going to take a slightly different course and do a little dry embossing instead using Claudine Hellmuth sticky backed canvas.

The canvas sheets hold their shape perfectly when put through an embossing machine and it's possible to achieve many different looks using paint and ink.

After cutting my heart I painted it a soft pink with acrylic paint before putting it through my embossing folder.

I used my finger to rub over a little white, leaving the depressions in the darker pink colour.

When that was dry I rubbed over again (still with a finger) with some Inka Gold cream but gold acrylic works just as well.

In these three other examples I've managed to create different finishes using different products. In this first one the base is pink acrylic and the top layer is the same pink mixed with white for a much softer look.

In this one the base is black acrylic and the top layer is silver which gives it a brushed metal look. Interesting considering it's fabric.  I'll be back to that one.

This one is Distress ink with more Inka gold rubbed over the top.

The background of my canvas is layers of music papers, white acrylic, Distress Crackle paint - Rock candy, Distress ink - Worn lipstick and some stamping. As well as the heart I've added three little Crystals from Prima and hung three more Genie stones also from Prima.

You remember that black and silver ATC size piece?  Well here it is sewn and added to a card.

Happy Valentines Day.

I'll be back next week with part three and back to using embossing powder.

Art journal with texture.

Hello there, I'm Jaine and thrilled to be here and as this is my first dt post I thought I'd share with you a couple of the things I really love.

The first is art journaling and second is texture and lots of it. Here I'll give you an idea of how I build up a page.

My background is a layer of tissue paper scrunched up, opened out and glued down to the page crinkles and all.  The second layer is texture paste spread through a Crafters Workshop Mini Harlequin stencil. Once this was dry I gave the whole page a light coat of gesso.  To add colour I thinned down some Adirondack acrylic paint in Pool and holding the page upright, painted areas while spraying with water to watch the paint settle and drip into all that lovely texture.

I wasn't done there and randomly painted over a layer of Ranger crackle paint in Rock Candy. It's pretty handy that this now comes in a generous 4oz pot as I'm totally in love with it and my teeny pot won't last much longer.

With the background done it was time for the collage and I took a sheet of Yours Truly by Glitz Designs and cut some strips out of it, scrunched it up in my hands and distressed the edge before sticking it down.

Vicki sent me some gorgeous Prima Resist canvas birds. As the name suggests these are canvas with a clever resist built into them so when you add paint or ink the resist pops out.  I coloured them with some Bombay ink in Golden Yellow and glued them down to the page.

I added my title with Jenni Bowlin Skinny Alpha's and a bit of Tim Holtz washi tape and I was finished.

Here's a little bit of a closer look at the texture;
