The first is art journaling and second is texture and lots of it. Here I'll give you an idea of how I build up a page.
My background is a layer of tissue paper scrunched up, opened out and glued down to the page crinkles and all. The second layer is texture paste spread through a Crafters Workshop Mini Harlequin stencil. Once this was dry I gave the whole page a light coat of gesso. To add colour I thinned down some Adirondack acrylic paint in Pool and holding the page upright, painted areas while spraying with water to watch the paint settle and drip into all that lovely texture.
I wasn't done there and randomly painted over a layer of Ranger crackle paint in Rock Candy. It's pretty handy that this now comes in a generous 4oz pot as I'm totally in love with it and my teeny pot won't last much longer.
With the background done it was time for the collage and I took a sheet of Yours Truly by Glitz Designs and cut some strips out of it, scrunched it up in my hands and distressed the edge before sticking it down.
Vicki sent me some gorgeous Prima Resist canvas birds. As the name suggests these are canvas with a clever resist built into them so when you add paint or ink the resist pops out. I coloured them with some Bombay ink in Golden Yellow and glued them down to the page.
I added my title with Jenni Bowlin Skinny Alpha's and a bit of Tim Holtz washi tape and I was finished.
Here's a little bit of a closer look at the texture;
